This is mine. Pasta with whatever vegetables I have on hand (frozen corn and peppers here), some kind of sausage (since it makes a great, flavorful fond. This is kielbasa.) some herbs (Daregals Original Blend) and a wine/broth sauce that gets almost completely absorbed into the noodles. I've posted about it here, here... uhm, here... Ok, I've gone over this method before, clearly. So I'm not going to do another post about it. Even though it had a different pasta so that makes it a different dish. Heh. But what I'm curious about is what your go-to dish is. What do you do when there's a half hour and you don't have any ingredients that you don't always have?
Mine's Two Pesto Pasta. Two pestos, yogurt, parmesan. I ALWAYS have the ingredients on hand. Oh, ummm...except when the yogurt on hand is vanilla.... Ew. I wrote about it a couple of weeks ago.

Mine's very similar! I actually saute hot dogs with olive oil until it's crispy on the edges and I mix it in with pasta and a creamy alfredo sauce. Mmmmm
ReplyDeleteI would have to say pasta would be my go to dish, too. I'd just mix it into anything I could find in the fridge.
ReplyDeletePasta is also my go to dish. In the summer I like to make it with dill, tomatoes, and feta (or other cheese available); in the winter it's usually peppers & sausage similar to yours.
ReplyDeleteThe pasta looks great! I go to steamed rice or dried noodles (egg, rice, or soba) with oyster sauce, and eggs. Those are things I always have in my house.
ReplyDeleteomelets. I always have eggs, cheese, and bread for toast on hand. The rest of the ingredients are a mystery until I dig around in the fridge. Usually a variety of cheeses. Maybe a feta, or blue, cheddar or gouda. Riccota. Carmelized onions. Sliced tomatoes. Mixed peppers, or mushrooms, or broccoli, any veggie. Ham or other various lunchmeats. Salsa. Chili. Taco meat. Garlic. Fresh herbs. Pretty much, any ingredient I find that needs to get used up, I can make into a combination that becomes a delectable omelet! And I just love making them. I am rather skillful at the flipping and folding, which gives me great pleasure as it seems to be a skill that evades most! (sorry Bob!) lol! And I love to make them oh so purdy!!
ReplyDeleteFrench toast. Always have bread and eggs and vanilla on hand, and with our one daughter we need to have 2 bottles of syrup in back up at all times!
ReplyDeleteYour go-to pasta dish looks delicious! I'm a huge pasta lover, so I do something similar. I'll chop up any veggies I have in the fridge. Usually I leave out the meat, mostly out of laziness, but I'll try adding the sausages!

For me, that's easy: a fried egg sandwich!
I think pasta is the universal go-to dish: I always have at least 2 or 3 kinds of noodles and there's usually enough ingredients to make nearly any kind of sauce!
ReplyDeleteBut for me, a go-to dish is not necessarily something that I have to make in a rush for surprise company; instead, it's the meal that I rely on knowing that nearly everyone would love it, instead of trying to guess preferences. It's pasta (usually penne) with a sausage, basil and mustard cream sauce - so easy to make and always a hit!
This looks great! I usually do beans and greens with sausage sautee. Or some kind of veggie burger with sweet potato oven fries.

ReplyDeleteI'll do beans & greens, if I'm lucky enough to have a dark leafy in the drawer. Otherwise, it's a bacon/egg/cheese sandwich.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick one warm meal I always have ingredients for, it's hot sandwiches, or maybe you'd call it toast pizza. Take pretty much any bread you have, put slices on a parchment-covered baking sheet, moisten with butter/mayo/ketchup/anything garlicky, then ham sliced or diced, or leftover meat or canned tuna or whatever you happen to have, cover with cheese and into the oven until cheese gets bubbly. Also a great way of using up leftover meats and vegs and slightly stale bread.

ReplyDeleteI have a couple...but my newest (which my husband and daughter love) is nuking TJs frozen brown rice, sauteing TJ's vacuum packed Chinese bbq pork with scallions...tossing all together and adding frozen peas and scrambled eggs.

ReplyDeleteGood stuff, everybody. I like to keep some "all purpose dough" in the fridge (not that I can, but I like to), and roll whatever I have in it. Right now I have some turkey pepperoni, low fat mozzarella and sliced onion rising in a tight roll. For a quick fix for just me though, I am with Goldie: a fried egg sandwich cannot be beat.

Oh, for anybody concerned:
ReplyDeleteAll Purpose Dough:
2 C AP Flour
2 C Whole Wheat Flour
1 Tbls instant yeast
1 tsp salt
1 C + some amount water
1+ Tbls olive oil
Mix half of the flours, all of the yeast and salt. Add 3/4 cup water (or just enough to make a sponge -- quite frankly I don't measure much anymore) and beat 100 vigorous strokes, until "strechy". Add flour to make a dough ball, and knead with more flour as needed. Knead in the oil toward the end. I don't know why it makes a difference, but it seems to. Place in oiled plastic bags in refrigerator for up to at least a week -- I have never let it stay longer, so YMMV :)
YUM! pasta anything is a great go-to dish. but i think my favorite to-go meal is my garlic pepper chicken.

ReplyDeleteAgain, pasta, but with a twist. almost any meat that hasn't already been strongly seasoned, sliced up. Throw it in a pan with a can of coconut milk, some bottled peanut sauce and curry paste. Simmer away and then stir in some veggies. Serve over soba noodles or spahetti...yum!
