Ponzu Tuna Salad
1 5 oz can of tuna, drained
2 tbls minced shallot
3 tbls diced red pepper
2 tbls mayonnaise
1 tsp ponzu sauce
pinch of red pepper flakes
black pepper to taste
salt, if needed
Mix everything well, serve on a roll, bed of greens, sliced bread, whatever. Letting it chill for an hour or two wouldn't hurt.

Once again Foodbuzz has come through with an awesome product sample for me. This time it's Kikkoman ponzu sauce. It's basically soy sauce with lime in it. The lime flavor is pretty subtle but it definitely does good things, I like it a lot. I figured I'd make some tuna salad with it. Not sure why, but that's what came to me. Heh. Anyway I did it and it was awesome. I even made it all fancy pants with shallot and stuff. It was quite different from my normal tuna salad and a really nice change. So who out there has used ponzu sauce? This was the first I had heard of it, what other stuff do you do with it?
I've had ponzu sauce dining out in various dishes but have not had the Kikkoman one and I unfortunately wasn't on a list for the tastemaker this time I guess but I would have loved to try it. It sounds fabulous as an addition to tuna salad!

ReplyDeleteThat ponzu is good stuff. Threw it in stir fry with oyster sauce, brown sugar, ginger and fish sauce, and it rocked. Adding it to tuna is a good idea though. It has a great tang.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely stir fry, soups, noodle dishes. You can use it in a lot of Japanese cooking. Or dip some tempura in it.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this, but like the taste of lime. Tuna sandwiches are my favorite thing! I'll have to look for the sauce.
ReplyDeleteAnthony Bourdain swears by shallots. He says that even though we may think restaurant chefs use onions. In reality, all they ever use is shallots. So you're up there with some of the best with this salad! Looks delicious.

I've had ponzu sauce though never done anything with it myself. I like it too. I REALLY like the idea of it in this tuna salad. And not just because I'm hungry for lunch.

ReplyDeleteEveryone needs a good tuna salad recipe. Looks like you found yours. I have never heard of ponzu sauce...very interesting that a mild lime flavor was added to soy sauce. I will have to pay attention at the grocery store. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI didn't know Kikkoman had ponzu! Soy sauce is a staple but I also like to have teriyaki sauce on hand; now I can add ponzu to the collection. The citrus and umami probably came through the richness of the mayo . . . mmmmmmm!
