Another Wine Post: Shiraz

Ok, here's another Bakespace wine review. I liked this wine very much and was quite disappointed when I went to buy some for my girlfriends brother as a Christmas present (and another one for myself) and there wasn't any left at the store. Plus I would like to remind anyone who is taking my food pairing suggestions to heart that I don't really know what I'm talking about. I'm either guessing (as is the case here) or giving you advice based on personal taste. So if you try something that I suggest and it turns out nasty, you've been warned. I would like to know though, since I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

Name:
Greg Norman Shiraz
Price: 11.99
Year: 2005

Short intro from the wine maker about the wine: This Shiraz from Australias Limestone Coast is made from vineyards grown on shallow red soils overlying hard limestone. Dark plum and black cherry are enhanced with a touch of spicy oak and followed by supple, yet supportive tannins.
Review: I don't know about supple, I didn't see it doing any splits or anything. But the smell is pleasant, light, fruity and has something like coffee or chocolate in there. Something rich like that anyway. The taste is smooth and bright, with a rich middle (proper term?) and nice, clean, very slightly tannic finish. I can definitely taste cherry and some kind of woody flavor, but that one is pretty subtle. It has a little of that same coffee/chocolate flavor that it has in the nose. Slightly dry, but not much.
Would you buy again?: Oh yes, it was very good.
Wine Pairing Ideas/Recipes: Once again I didn't have any cheese to try with it, so I can't help you there. Honestly, I'm not really sure what it would go well with. Probably strong desserts, maybe something like tiramisu. But I didn't try it with anything sweet, so I don't know for sure. I bet it would go well with something like Korean short ribs or a good teriyaki.

  1. Great review of this wine! I had to laugh out loud at your interpretation of "supple"! Don't you know they write all these wine flavor terms down on little pieces of paper and then just pull them out of a hat when they're describing the wine on the label! Ha!

  2. Thanks Karen! Heh, is that how they do it? It makes sense, how else would they come up with some of the stuff they say?

  3. Don't forget all wine tasting is subjective so if you recommend a food with something and someone else doesn't like it...it's okay...we all have varying tastes.

  4. I know I will learn a lot from you on these posts as I am clueless on what wine goes with what.
My father used to have a best friend who was a farily famous sommelier (sp?) and everytime he came over to our house I would love the smells of all the wines he would open for them and sample. Never forget those smells.

Dawn: Now that sounds like a good friend to have. Heh. I'm still learning a lot about this myself, but hey, knowledge is meant to be shared. :D
