I need advice!

I'm soon going to be in the market for a new digital camera and I don't have any idea what kind to get. I don't have a huge budget, but I'm going to save up for a bit so I can get something nice. Well, I'm going to try to save. Heh. I only need it for food photography, but I don't get very good light in my apartment so something that can compensate for that and get nice clear closeups is what I'm looking for. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I will talk to Tony. I am pretty sure he will say the best place to look is Tiger Direct, but he will probably have a specific recommendation for a camera, too. Believe me--you want to listen to him. :-)

I got a little Canon Powershot
A1000IS for Christmas and I was amazed at the picture quality it takes. I know it's not that expensive, but the pictures, so far (I'm still learning all the switches) are exceptional. I've taken a few pics at night and it was great. This camera has 4x zoom which is PERFECT for food. In fact I noticed my new food pics (which aren't up on my blog yet) were far better than my old giant clunker of a camera (Olympus something). Plus this new camera has all kinds of settings for day, night, portraits, fireworks, pets, landscape, etc...
Whatever you do choose, get something that has at least 4x zoom, critical for up-close food shots. Consumer Reports 2009 ratings book is helpful too.
That was a long answer, sorry.

The low light is hard. I mean the SLR's have the low light sensor but those crisp photos come from the shutter being open a fraction of second which is not what happens in low light situations. I use a Panasonic Lumix (Lumex?) FZ 50 which is an amzing camera (not SLR) for a great price. It was made for food photography, allowing you to get up really close. But you would have to set up some lighting bouncing of the ceiling. Totally worth it though.

I like my Canon PowerShot A570IS... but I just use it on Auto! I have no idea how to use all the other settings (and there are lots!)

You know, if you get a small desk lamp (or two) you can make more light for your pics and it will make a world of difference.

Best of luck Bob camera shopping. It's so tricky without good lighting. I found that even my good Cannon Powershot isn't that great without good lighting. You could always get one of those table photo lights too, they are awesome. Email me if you need more details. Happy New Year!

MB and I have always been big fans of the Canon cameras. Both our SLR and digital cameras are mid-range Canons. TigerDirect does have excellent prices, but I am frequently disappointed in the customer service I get from them. Mind you, I keep going back because the prices are so good...

Most important, I think is that you get a mini tripod and ideally a remote shutter control so you can take pictures with dirty hands. Cooking is messy!
